THE STORY
Hi there – I’m Karencita
A proud Part-Peruvian mom with two beautiful girls, aged 5 and 6 years old.
Growing up with Peruvian and Kiwi influences, my grandma, Micelsia, shaped my love for Peru and family connections through food.
From a little town called Chepén, she created mouthwatering Peruvian dishes even in New Zealand during the ’80s (when there were no international food stores!), using simple grocery store ingredients.
My grandma’s cooking filled our home with love and joy. Those memories are my treasure, and I was excited to share this rich heritage with my girls. But life had its tests.
The Christchurch Earthquake in 2011 took my mom from me. Over time, I grew disconnected, and that part of my identity began to fade away with no one to turn to for answers like you would with your mom.
Navigating this journey of rediscovering my roots and creating a strong bond inside my little ones felt overwhelming and lonely. I feared losing a significant part of my identity and culture, all while trying to keep up with the demands of modern life.
Finding reliable, everyday Peruvian recipes that fit my busy life and ingredients that were easily sourced proved a challenge. Typical Peruvian cookbooks didn’t quite align with my needs.
Realizing the gap, I stepped up to create what I needed, drawing from my grandma’s cherished passed-down notes (though some incomplete!) and vivid memories of the food and taste. My mission: to revive the flavors and traditions that hold a special place in my heart.
I may not be an expert on all things Peruvian, but thanks to my amazing grandma, Micelsia, I absolutely love the culture! Her delicious cooking and the special moments we shared made me feel connected to my roots. Now, I want to pass this love and tradition down to my daughters. Even though I don’t have all the answers, I’m excited to share what I’ve learned with other Part-Peruvian moms. Let’s celebrate our identity, make beautiful memories with our families, and keep our Peruvian heritage alive!
